Plastic fantastic? How Antwerp is cooperating to keep plastics out of the river Scheldt
We are pleased to invite you to the launch event of the new AMS Alumni Chapter on SDG Leadership (ACSL): Plastic fantastic? How Antwerp is cooperating to keep plastics out of the river Scheldt which will take place on November 9th at our AMS Campus.
During our launch-event and based on the SDG6 (Clean water & sanitation), SDG14 (Life below water), SDG 17 (Partnerships for the goals), we will explore how Antwerp is cooperating to keep plastics out of the River Scheldt by giving a short overview of the problem of global plastic pollution as well as a scientifically grounded approach to systematically reduce it. Building on this, we will give an introduction to the actions and initiatives related to this in the area of Antwerp and its port.
About Riverine Plastic pollution
Riverine plastic pollution is the main driver of marine plastic pollution which has evolved into a severe global environmental problem that can be considered as a planetary ecological boundary threat. Additionally, the river Scheldt is transporting plastic waste to the North Sea. As such, plastic pollution of the Scheldt is already a subject of research and concrete action which has brought together multiple organizations in Antwerp, such as businesses and industry, governmental and non-governmental organizations, universities, and research institutes, most of which are connected to the Antwerp Management School. Due to the complexity and importance of the problem, both research and actions need to be intensified in the near future. This will require a coordinated effort by partnerships of all relevant organizations and people.
